Hard-shell carry-on luggage: a buying checklist
Hard-shell carry-ons look alike in photos. The differences show up in the specs, and in what the listing leaves out. Here is a checklist you can use on any listing, with The Weekender Set as the worked example.
1. Size measured with the wheels
Airlines measure the whole bag, wheels and handles included. Some listings quote body size only. The Weekender carry-on is 55 × 34 × 22 cm (21.6 × 13.4 × 8.66 in) including wheels.
2. Two wheels or four
Four spinner wheels let the case roll upright beside you and turn in place, which helps in aisles and crowded terminals. Two-wheel cases have to be tilted and pulled. The Weekender carry-on has four spinner wheels, each turning a full 360°.
3. Handle heights
A telescoping handle with several stops lets people of different heights pull the case comfortably. This one has three heights and reaches 83 cm (32.6 in) from the floor when fully extended, plus a fixed carry handle on top for lifting.
4. Lock type
Check whether the lock is built in and whether it is TSA-approved. The Weekender carry-on has a side-mounted combination lock. It is not TSA-approved.
5. Inside, not just outside
A hard shell usually opens into two halves. Look for a way to hold each side closed. Here, one half has a zip divider panel and the other has cross straps that buckle closed.
6. What the listing does not say
Missing specs matter. We do not publish a weight, a capacity in liters or an expandable zip for this set because the manufacturer does not list them, and we will not guess. The set is made of polyester and has a wave-textured hard shell.
The extra piece
The Weekender Set adds a matching hard-shell vanity case, 30 × 30 × 16 cm (11.8 × 11.8 × 6.3 in), that rides on the carry-on's handle. Both pieces are $149 together, with free US shipping and 30-day returns.
